But You Never Mattered?

One of the most crushing feelings we can be confronted with is the realisation that we never really mattered to someone we viewed as significant. That they did not remember the things that were important to us, or the details of our lives that we shared; that they never listened to the words that came from the depths of our hearts and found a resting place within our souls.

Of course that hurts.

But think of it this way: It is a prescient reminder that we really do matter to those who appreciate and understand us. They may be few in number, but they enhance our lives immeasurably and they matter as much to us as we do to them.

I think the American Singer and Actor, Eartha Kitt, got it right when she said, “It’s all about falling in love with yourself and sharing that love with someone who appreciates you, rather than looking for love to compensate for a self-love deficit."

But as almost always, I like to leave the last word to the Persian Poet and Mystic, Rumi, who wrote, "You wander from room to room hunting for the diamond necklace that is already around your neck."

You do not have to seek those to whom you matter. They might be standing right in front of you as you read this; they might have been with you all along.

Be mindful.

Be hopeful.
